Tell us about your career journey so far
I have worked for Boots for over 12 years, I started as an advisor in the Customer Support Centre and worked in several different roles including the training team, upskilling and inducting new joins to the business. In March 2020 I was successful in securing a Team Leader role. During my time as a Team Leader, I took a real interest in process and policy. A role came up in the Peoplepoint Team, so I spent some development time with the team and decided to apply for the role, I was successful in the interview process and joined the team in July 2024.
What is the People Point team and why did you want to join?
The Peoplepoint team sit within the HR function, and they support Line Managers in their decision making in line with company policy. As mentioned above, I have a real interest in policy and helping people, so Peoplepoint felt like the perfect role for me to move into & develop my career.
What is the role of an Employee Relations Advisor? What does an average day look like?
The role of an Employee Relations Advisor is primarily a phone role, however, does include tasks such as letter checking for managers and answering emails. It involves speaking to managers daily, offering support and guidance with policy and decision-making concerning team members. No two days are the same – you can receive calls relating to absence right up to grievances and safeguarding concerns. Knowing that Line Managers turn to Peoplepoint for support and guidance and knowing you are making a difference is really rewarding.

What skills and experience do you need to become an Employee Relations Advisor?
I found that having line manager experience really helped me secure and settle into the role, and having an interest in policy also helps you to give advice to managers. Great phone presence, patience and understanding also are key skills to succeeding in the role.
What do you enjoy about your role and working at Boots?
I love this role, knowing I’m helping managers make good decisions and run their businesses well. In terms of working for Boots, the people are fantastic, and I have built great relationships across all roles I have worked in. The benefits are also great, I often utilise the staff discount and extra holiday buying.
Have you had any opportunities for growth and development?
Since I’ve been in the team, I’ve had opportunities to join the on-call team for out of hours urgent contacts. I have had the opportunity to attend workshops and webinars regarding updates to employment law and employment rights. I have also taken over the team recognition scheme and the running of it. There are plenty of opportunities to get involved with projects.
What’s next for you?
What is next for me… I want to continue to grow my skills and knowledge within the HR function and I plan on starting my CIPD qualification in the future.
