Black History Month 2024: My Journey as a Young Black Professional – Brian’s Story

Can you tell us a bit about your journey and your heritage?

I was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, and moved to the UK when I was just three years old. Growing up in a supportive family, I was encouraged to have open conversations and embrace our culture. Being Black has been a fundamental part of my identity, shaping my worldview and approach to challenges. As a 25-year-old Black male, my journey has involved understanding and embracing my cultural background, using it as a source of strength and inspiration throughout my career.

Tell us a bit about your career at Boots so far.

I’ve been with Boots UK for four years, starting as a Customer Support Centre (CSC) Advisor and working my way up to my current role as a Data Analyst within Pharmacy Operations. My academic background includes a First Class degree in Economics from the University of Leicester. My career has been a journey of growth and learning, with each role presenting new challenges and opportunities. These experiences have built a strong foundation and allowed me to contribute meaningfully to the company’s success.

How did you get into your current role?

My journey to becoming a Data Analyst began after I finished university. Unfortunately, the job market was heavily impacted by COVID-19 at the time, so I initially joined the CSC based on recommendations from friends. After five months, I saw an internal job posting for a Data Analyst role and decided to apply. To strengthen my application, I reached out to the line manager to inquire about shadowing the role, which demonstrated my proactive attitude. This effort helped me secure the position, and I’ve been in the role ever since.

What have you enjoyed most about your career so far?

I’ve particularly enjoyed the opportunity to work on diverse projects that impact both our store colleagues and patients. Whether it’s analysing data for the Boots Online Prescription Platform or collaborating with various teams, the chance to make a difference and grow professionally has been incredibly rewarding. I’ve also appreciated the support and encouragement from colleagues who have helped me along the way.

What does Black History Month mean to you?

Black History Month is a time to reflect on and celebrate the significant contributions and rich history of Black individuals. It’s an opportunity to honour those who paved the way and to acknowledge the progress we’ve made. For me, it’s also a chance to share my personal story and celebrate both our achievements and the ongoing work needed to continue advancing.

How have you been supported during your career as a Black professional?

I’ve been fortunate to receive strong support from colleagues, my line manager, and various networks that understand the unique challenges faced by Black professionals. The presence of the Race, Ethnicity & Cultural Heritage (REACH) Business Resource Group at Boots has also contributed to a supportive environment where my contributions are valued and recognised.

How important is it for Black voices to lead discussions during Black History Month?

It’s essential for Black voices to lead these discussions to ensure our experiences and perspectives are accurately represented. Black History Month provides a platform to amplify these voices and highlight the diverse narratives within the Black community. It’s a time for education and advocacy, emphasizing the need for continued progress and understanding.

What advice would you give to someone wanting to learn more about Black history and culture?

To deepen your understanding of Black history and culture, explore a variety of resources such as books, documentaries, and historical accounts. Engage with organisations and communities dedicated to Black heritage and contributions. Participate in events and discussions during Black History Month and beyond. Seeking diverse perspectives and being open to learning from different experiences will enrich your knowledge and appreciation.
