Black History Month 2025: Marissa’s Story at Boots

Can you tell us a bit about your career journey so far and what inspired you to join Boots?

After graduating with a First Class degree in Pharmaceutical and Cosmetic Science, I began my career at Boots through a three-month secondment as a Product Performance Testing Technologist. This initial role opened the door to further opportunities within the business, including positions in Research and now Product Delivery, where I currently work as a Formulation Technician for No7 Skincare. Each role has enabled me to develop technical skills and gain valuable cross-functional experience. My decision to join Boots was driven by a genuine passion for beauty and a strong interest in product innovation.

How do you feel Boots supports diversity, equity, and inclusion?

At Boots I feel diversity, equity and inclusion are actively championed through our Business Resource Groups (BRGs). From REACH (Race, Ethnicity and Cultural Heritage) to Women of The Boots Group, Pride, InclusivIT, and the Disability Alliance, these groups cultivate inclusive, supportive spaces where colleagues can connect, share experiences and grow together. I’m proud to be part of the REACH BRG leadership team, serving as the Networking and Careers Lead. In this role, I aim to help colleagues build meaningful relationships and access opportunities that support both their personal development and career progression.

Have you had any role models or mentors who have influenced your career path, either inside or outside of work?

I’ve been fortunate to have many positive role models throughout my life, but my parents have had the greatest influence. They’ve always encouraged me to pursue my goals, no matter the challenges. When I didn’t get into my first-choice university I initially decided not to go. It was their support and belief in the value of the experience that motivated me to continue. Their encouragement played a key role in shaping my journey, and without it I may not have had the opportunities that led me to where I am today at Boots.

What advice would you give to Black early-career professionals entering your industry today?

My advice to Black early-career professionals would be to prioritise building their network. While knowledge and skills are essential, the connections you make can often open doors to opportunities that might not be visible. You never know where a conversation, introduction, or shared experience might lead and those relationships can be instrumental in shaping your career journey.

What does Black History Month mean to you personally, and how do you celebrate or reflect during this time?

For me Black History Month is an important time to honour the richness of Black culture and reflect on the contributions of individuals past and present who have shaped our communities and continue to drive progress. This year’s theme, Standing Firm in Power and Pride resonates deeply. To mark the occasion, I’ll be recognising those who have led, influenced, and championed positive change within the Black community through books, documentaries and films that highlight the pride in our roots and the strength it takes to break down barriers.

What advice would you give to someone wanting to learn more about Black History and culture?

To learn more about Black history and culture start with books, documentaries, and podcasts by Black creators. Take time to connect with colleagues, friends, and others from Black communities to better understand their lived experiences. Explore resources on allyship if you’re unsure where to begin and don’t stop at Black History Month!

Looking ahead, what are your hopes for the next generation of Black talent entering the workplace?

Looking ahead, I hope the next generation of Black talent enter workplaces where they are equitably represented at all levels, including senior leadership. I hope the next generation feel seen, supported, and empowered to reach their full potential.
