Tell us a bit about you and your career with Boots so far.

In November of this year, I will have been with the company 20 years, I really cannot believe how the years have passed. I’ve been very lucky to have had such a good career path with Boots. Originally, I started as a Christmas temp, then my Manager asked if I was interested in having a permanent job with Boots which I was delighted to accept. I went on to be a sun shop Fragrance Consultant, then after a couple of years I went on a stepping stones course to go into management. After my course, I went on to become an Assistant Manager in a flag ship store, then onto a Store Manager. I was lucky to have moved round different areas and gain lots of experience.

What do you love about working in retail?

I enjoy working in retail because something different happens each day. Apart from my team, it’s always the customer that comes first, just to say good morning and good afternoon – you never know if you’re the first person that they’ve spoken to, one thing could just make a difference to that patient or customer. It’s just great to be part of a busy environment and such varied products, whether it’s healthcare or premium makeup.

What have been the most rewarding moments in your career so far?

Throughout my career I’ve had some very rewarding times, whether it’s been related to a staff member or a customer that has come in to say thank you. A couple of months ago I was surprised to be nominated for International Women’s Day, I felt so proud.

What skills are required to lead a team and store?

To lead a store team I always feel that you need to be fair, not to judge and be a good listener. It’s how you approach your team, and I always want us to be one team. One thing I feel is very important, especially with how tough it’s been for people over the past few years is confidentiality. We never know what people are going through, and I think it’s good as a leader, that a colleague comes to you if they feel confident that they can speak to you knowing it’s in confidence.

How has Boots supported your career development and training?

I have always been supported with training, whether that’s been on a one-to-one basis or going out to stores. Different courses over the years, area meetings and E-learnings have helped so much as an individual to learn new things.
