Davids Journey from Trainee Pharmacist to Healthcare Academy Trainer | Boots
Meet David, a Healthcare Academy Trainer at Boots, as he shares his inspiring journey from Trainee Pharmacist to Healthcare Academy Leader. In this blog, David reflects on the experiences, challenges and achievements that have shaped his career, the support he received along the way, and the rewarding impact pharmacy can have on patients’ lives. He also offers valuable advice for aspiring trainee pharmacists considering a career with Boots.
What inspired you to become a pharmacist?
I have always had a passion for science, particularly chemistry, and from an early age I found great fulfilment in helping and supporting others. Pharmacy offered the perfect opportunity to combine these two interests into a rewarding career. During my university studies, it became clear that community pharmacy was where I wanted to be, as it allowed me to make a meaningful difference to the health and wellbeing of local patients every day.
For me, there was no better place to begin that journey than Boots. While at university, I completed two summer placements with Boots before undertaking my trainee pharmacist year. A year that I thoroughly enjoyed and one that firmly cemented my passion for the profession. Since qualifying, I have held a variety of pharmacist management roles, which have provided invaluable experience and opportunities for growth, before moving into my current role as a Healthcare Academy Trainer (HAT) in November 2024.
There are many reasons why I have chosen to build my career with Boots, but two stand out above all others. The first is the incredible support I have received from colleagues and peers throughout my journey. Having a strong support network is invaluable and can make all the difference during challenging moments. The second is the privilege of serving and becoming part of the communities in which I work. Seeing first-hand the positive impact that pharmacy services can have on patients’ lives is incredibly rewarding and continues to inspire me every day.
What was the biggest challenge you faced during your training, and how did you overcome it?
The biggest challenge I faced during my training was preparing for and successfully passing the registration assessment. There are no shortcuts to achieving this, it requires dedication, consistency, and a strong work ethic. Looking back, I was fortunate to have the support of the Boots training programme my designated supervisor and my Healthcare Academy Trainer, Sam, who provided me with the guidance, resources, and encouragement I needed throughout the process. Their support gave me the best possible foundation to succeed and played a significant role in ensuring I felt confident and well prepared for the assessment.
Who has been the most supportive in your career develop?
There have been many colleagues, peers, and managers who have supported my career development throughout my time at Boots. Building and nurturing this network has been instrumental in helping me grow professionally and pursue new opportunities within the organisation.
What skills or experiences have you learnt throughout your career with Boots?
I have had the opportunity to develop and broaden my skills as a pharmacist throughout my career with Boots, delivering a wide range of healthcare services. These experiences have allowed me to continually expand my clinical knowledge, build confidence, and enhance the care I provide to patients.
In 2022, I was proud to be part of the first cohort of Boots’ Route to Independent Prescriber programme. I was incredibly grateful for the support and investment Boots provided in funding my university studies to achieve my Independent Prescriber qualification. This was a significant milestone in my professional journey and remains one of my proudest achievements.
Alongside my clinical development, my management roles have enabled me to build the leadership, operational, and people-management skills required to become a successful Store Manager. It is a career path I had not initially considered when I first qualified, but one that has been both rewarding and instrumental in my personal and professional growth.
What’s been the most rewarding part of working for Boots?
There have been many incredibly rewarding moments throughout my career with Boots, but none more meaningful than those occasions when the care, support, and advice provided by my team and me have had a genuine positive impact on someone’s life. I have been fortunate to experience several such moments, from supporting a young pregnant patient to overcome heroin addiction so she could give her baby the best possible start in life, to helping identify the early signs of bowel cancer, enabling timely treatment and ultimately contributing to a positive outcome for the patient.
What advice would you give to someone considering a trainee pharmacist role?
Absolutely go for it, you won’t regret it. The support you’ll receive throughout your foundation training with Boots is truly second to none. From your store team and Designated Supervisor to your Healthcare Academy Trainer, you’ll be surrounded by people who are invested in your success and committed to helping you make the most of your training year.
What’s equally exciting is the variety of opportunities available beyond your training year. Boots offers a wide range of career pathways, many of which you may not have considered when you first begin your journey. Whether your interests lie in clinical practice, leadership, management, education, or specialist areas of pharmacy, there are countless opportunities to grow and develop. If you have the passion, ambition, and drive to achieve something, Boots will support you every step of the way and help you become the very best version of yourself.
