One aspect of the Boots UK graduate scheme that is less talked about is the store placement.

The store placement is vital for so many reasons and I can completely understand why it is such a necessary part of the graduate programme. Not only are we given the opportunity to learn all about how a Boots UK store functions on a daily basis, we get to meet and interact with customers directly. Through spending time and helping customers to find exactly what they want or need in store, we can really begin to understand just how we can improve customers’ experiences. We learn exactly how to make them “feel good”.

So far I have worked a mixture of shift patterns, alongside different teams. My role has found me putting the early morning delivery away, learning how to operate the till, helping customers find their perfect foundation colour, rebuilding shelves and changing shop layouts, booking-in boots.com deliveries, taking part in “sales planning” (putting out all of the new price tickets for discounted items) to cashing-up at the end of a busy day: I have seen so many sides to how a Boots UK store operates.

One thing that did really surprise me about coming into store was just how much independence and responsibility I am given. I take part in the day-to-day tasks in store but I also have been given the autonomy to run my own projects. For example, I was holding a fundraising-fitness charity event on 1st November, 2015 in aid of Macmillan Caner Support. It was called “Boots Camp” and all participants received a Boots goody bag for taking part.

Not only was it a fun way to raise money for the fantastic cause but it demonstrate to our customers and the general public what our local Boots store can do in the community. It is about showing that Boots truly cares. I have also been placed in-charge of the boots.com orders for this Christmas. I am running an employee incentive scheme to encourage all colleagues to promote ordering online and to make sure that our customers are aware of the convenient next-day delivery service we provide.

I am really enjoying the store placement so far. Working with a friendly, welcoming and supportive Boots team whilst meeting new customers everyday makes each day a pleasure. I cannot wait for the Christmas period to properly begin. It is so exciting seeing all of the new 3 for 2 gifts arrive and feel the Christmas buzz starting to fill the store. It should be a busy, but thoroughly enjoyable experience. I don’t think I will want to leave!
