Lead Engineer

An exciting opportunity has arisen in Boots UK for an individual to join the International Data & Analytics (D&A) platform team as a Lead Engineer within the Global Chief Technology Office of Walgreens Boots Alliance. The International D&A platform team support the International divisions including Boots UK & ROI, No7 Beauty Company & International Retail to digitise and transform their data to a cloud-based D&A platform.

The Lead Engineer role is responsible for overseeing all engineering development on the D+A platform for the International divisions, to ensure appropriate engineering governance is in place. The role works closely with WBA technology and engineering partners and with internal WBA teams to deliver D&A capabilities that will allow us to maximize the value of data for WBA.
The role will require close working with engineering teams in the UK, Italy, US and offshore. It will also require collaboration with teams in the US to standardise approaches globally.

About the opportunity

• Engineering governance and QA across the full portfolio of projects in delivery phase, ensuring all engineering teams are adhering to platform standards and helping to shape future ways of working and engineering governance.
• Ensuring the application of technical standards to deliver coherent engineering standards, release management and CI/CD.
• Governing the development of the platform automation frameworks and the use across all delivery and live services.
• Help to build and maintain software development environments across a mixture of technologies on MS Azure cloud infrastructure, aligning to principles governed by architects and developed with the engineers.
• Using ETL and Code Generation tools to manipulate data feeds to build data loading systems and production data pipelines.
• Establishing maintenance/continuous improvement activities – root cause analysis, platform optimisation, monitoring/alerting/exception reporting.
• Work with Engineering Delivery teams (WBA Naples engineering teams and external partners (such as TCS and Accenture) to ensure the project solutions are successfully scoped and delivered in line with the platform & WBA standards and guidelines.

About you

• The role would suit someone with a background in or degree in IT, Science, Engineering or someone experienced in analytics, insights, business intelligence looking to move into a IT centric role. A background in data engineering and DevOps/RunOps or service management would be beneficial to the role.
• You’ll need to have demonstrable hands-on experience as a Data Engineer in a large corporate environment taking leadership accountability – this role is not about leading a team but having the confidence and passion to take personal accountability for projects of varying scale and inspiring the implementation of outstanding solutions
• You can demonstrate significant experience in leading complex Software Engineering and Architecture initiatives
• Experience in building a data platform on the cloud - hands on experience with Microsoft Azure Data Products mandatory
• Previous experience of engineering data pipelines in Azure, building ETL pipelines and data loading systems is essential. Experience with Microsoft ETL tooling, such as Azure Data Factory, as well as experience of metadata driven ETL.
• Hands-on experience with data handling: ability to extract, prepare, and structure data
• SQL development and tuning are essential.
• Experience of leading and establishing the ways of development to assist with forming a new development capability
• Strong communication skills, working on global/international projects and multi-disciplinary teams with colleagues in both technical and business facing roles.
