Each year we sponsor a number of colleagues to train as Student Dispensing Opticians (SDO). They’re recognised for their performance in practice and have a desire to further their career as a Dispensing Optician.

Our Student Dispensing Optician Programme provides you with an exciting opportunity to build on your existing dispensing knowledge and skills. Our programme is focussed on ensuring you qualify as a dispensing optician and become part of a wider professional team within Boots Opticians.

What you will see and feel

Successful applicants will undertake the Level 6 Fellowship Diploma in Ophthalmic Dispensing at ABDO College, Godmersham, Kent. It’s a three-year blended learning experience involving home-study, in-practice experience, and residential block releases at ABDO college. This allows colleagues currently employed for a minimum of 30 hours per week to train as Dispensing Optician whilst preparing for their fellowship diploma examinations (FBDO).
  • Working in practice as a Student Dispensing Optician whilst carrying out your normal duties, and you will also be expected to complete weekly coursework assignments which will be submitted and marked by an ABDO tutor.
  • You will be required to attend a two-week block of residential study at ABDO college in Kent, twice per academic year.
  • The course is heavily grounded in maths, physics, and biology, so applicants should be both competent and confident in these subjects.
  • Coursework assignments are expected to take a minimum of 15 hours per week to be completed outside normal working hours.
If you are interested in training as a Dispensing Optician, you will need to meet the following criteria before you apply (we will also ask you to produce your education certificates to confirm your results):
  • ABDO College Requirement.
  • Option 1 - 5 GCSE’s grade A to C (4-9 from 2017) to include Maths, English, a Science and 2 optional subjects or equivalent.
  • Option 2 - Intermediate Apprenticeship with Boots (Level 2 or level 3 Diploma) PLUS - Functional skills Level 2 in Maths and English and 2 further optional GCSE subjects
  • Option 3 - Minimum 5 years optical experience (In any optical business) PLUS – GCSEs in Maths and English grades A-C or Functional skills Level 2 in Maths and English
Company Requirements
  • Currently operating at Optical Consultant level or higher
  • 1 Years' experience working in optics.
  • Demonstrating a ‘Performing’ or above standard against your Personal Development Plan and Behaviours
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Comfortable with complex mathematics, physics, and biology
  • Ability to combine the above talents with a commercial focus
  • Applicants will be employed for 30 hrs per week and must also accept that coursework & study time will be primarily completed outside of regular working hours
  • The role will potentially involve an acceptance of daily travel and a degree of mobility.
