Hi I'm Sarah! When deciding on what to study, I had the difficult decision of deciding between dentistry and pharmacy. I enjoyed the chemistry behind medicines, so at the last minute, I chose Pharmacy.

After my third year of studying Pharmacy at university, I was offered a place on the Boots Summer Placement Programme. I really enjoyed it and got along well with my team. I found Boots had put lots of thought and effort into the programme and provided lots of tools for learning. It was exactly what I was looking for!

Since starting my pre-reg, I have been working in the dispensary and speaking to lots of customers. I’m still surprised by the number of people asking for my advice!

I have also been working on auditing our New Medicines Service. In this, we speak to patients after they start new medication and see how things are going. At the moment, I am recording how many people we have on this service. Once I have the results, I will implement changes and ensure these patients keep returning to Boots.

As well as my project on the New Medicines Service, I will be coaching my team on the complete care conversation. This ensures that we're providing lifestyle advice as well as medication, to benefit the patient. The first step with this will be to observe my team. There is lots of work but it is rewarding and my tutor is very supportive.

Boots will be attending the Royal Pharmaceutical Society Conference on Sunday 9 & Monday 10 September. Come along and meet us if you are there. We look forward to seeing you.

About the conference.

The Royal Pharmaceutical Society will be hosting its third annual conference, to be held at the ICC in Birmingham on Sunday 9 and Monday 10 September 2012. The two day conference will once again provide delegates with opportunities to develop their professional, practice and leadership skills, network with peers and learn about the latest practice developments from across Great Britain. The aim of the conference is to bring the pharmacy profession together and to provide support and development to pharmacy professionals. This year’s conference will focus on how innovation can contribute and is essential in ensuring we continue to deliver top class patient care; with the theme for 2012 encompassing: ‘Enhancing patient care through innovation.’

There will be approximately 400+ conference delegates per day from across the pharmacy profession, with a large majority made up of hospital, community and academic pharmacists. As well as this we will be working closely with the British Pharmaceutical Students Association to encourage students and preregistration trainees to attend, with free conference places made available to them.

The conference is aimed at:

Frontline pharmacists facing patients in their day-to-day work – who wish to be supported in developing their professional and leadership skills so they can be better equipped to deal with the many professional issues they face on a daily basis. This includes: community, hospital and primary care pharmacists.

Academics in pharmacy practice – who want to be at the cutting edge of the practice research base for pharmacy and healthcare, using research to derive evidence which can in turn be used to innovate practice and policy.

Pharmacy students and preregistration trainees – who wish to understand the development of their future career in pharmacy and the opportunities available.

Congratulations to Vicki Watters for her success at the first ever Royal Pharmaceutical Society Awards held in London.

Vicki scooped the winners award for Pre-Reg Trainee of the Year category - a truly fantastic achievement.

The Royal Pharmaceutical Society Awards gives great opportunity to recognise successful projects or initiatives and more importantly the proactive and innovative approach that led to their success. These are the projects which raise the benchmark in the profession and allow everyone to learn. They benefit everyone but more importantly benefit patients.

On Thursday 8 September, the winners of Retail Week's 2011 Skillsmart Retail Rising Stars awards were announced at London's Grosvenor House Hotel. The Rising Star Awards celebrate those individual and teams who really make a difference to their company's performance.

The award ceremony brought together hundreds of retail professionals to honour those who have performed outstandingly over the last year. Through gruelling interviews with every individual, the judges were looking for people who demonstrated the skills and intuition to serve the needs of the business both at the support centre and in stores. The categories were tough with competitors from almost every retailer represented.

We are so proud to announce.....

  • Alex Ball from our Baby Category scooped the Winners award in "The Buyer/Merchandiser of the year" category.
  • Rachel Horsefield was highly commended in the "Online Team/Individual of the year" category.
  • Oliver Warner from our Supply Chain development was also shortlisted within the Store Support of the year category.

A massive congratulations to all.

We’re delighted to be consistently ranked amongst the best companies to work for, according to the latest results of two prestigious national surveys.

Boots Opticians scooped the coveted first place on The Sunday Times Best 25 Big Companies to Work For list. As well as being the UK’s very best big company to work for, we also won a special award for ‘Innovation in Engagement’ in recognition of the work the Boots Opticians Forum does to encourage open communication across the business. Boots Opticians was awarded a Best Companies Three-Star Status, which makes us an ‘extraordinary’ company to work for!

This year, Boots UK earned a brilliant 19th place in The Sunday Times list and a prestigious One-Star Status – it’s the second year running that we’ve been considered a ‘first class’ organisation to work for.

In Ireland, we’ve been leading the way for even longer. For the last three years running we've been ranked one of the Best Workplaces in Ireland, as featured in the Irish Independent.

Perhaps the best thing about these awards is that they’re based on feedback from our own people. Teams across the business reported that they relish the great team spirit and feeling of reward, recognition and appreciation.
