Our belief that sound environmental management makes good business sense has stood the test of time. We've reduced our carbon footprint by over 10,000 tonnes since 2005.

Carbon Management is something people across the business can contribute to every day: recycling a tonne of paper saves around 15 average-sized trees; turning off a dripping tap saves 1200 litres of water a year. In fact some of our very best ideas come from our people...

MUD: good for the environment

We've known the importance of conserving energy since as far back as World War I, when we introduced a fleet of electric vans. Today, ensuring our vehicles save both energy and fuel is just as important. This is where the Multi-deck Urban Delivery trailer (or MUD for short) comes in.

MUD was the brainchild of one of our people, Dave Landy, who manages our fleet of vehicles. Dave realised that the wasted space between the front and back wheels of our lorries could be used for an extra floor, enabling them to carry 50% more stock. This meant vehicles would spend much less time on the road, in turn reducing our carbon emissions (and fuel bills).

After successful trials (and a carbon innovation award) we now have 11 vehicles in operation delivering estimated savings of 475,000 km and 358 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually.
